This is Random_Irony

Heyaz everybody.  Not an entirely DK-related post, but this account has been my main lj for quite some time, however I sorta stopped using livejournal for a while, with the exception of occasionally checking in with the DK comm, and so I kept posting under my old Random_Irony account.  Now I want to kinda start getting involved in LJ again, so I figured I would officially make the switch.  So hi.  Feel free to add me as a friend and I may do the same to others now.

To make this somewhat DK related, I've noticed that this comm is quite... dead.  And I can't offer much, but I have been working on a story on fanfiction.net called Dragon Knights: Unending, in which I sort of continue the story and try to answer all of the unanswered questions in my own way.  But right now I’m trying to decide what exactly happened with Roobal and the 8 stones and I’m pretty blank on what to write because there’s so few concrete facts to work with.  In the manga, Roobal said he was never revived because he never died, but then he’s saying that he needs to do something for Kharl in return for the soul he gave him.  And then it turns out he’s actually Sinistora?!  Or, at least it looks to me as though he changed into Sinistora right before he jumped into the hole to a different dimension.  So my questions are:
A) Was Roobal perhaps working for Kharl even back when he first met Bierrez in the second volume’s flashback?  (If so, that’s a damn lot of foreplanning on Ohkami-sensei’s part.)  And how does he tie in to Kharl’s creation of Sinistora?
B) What are the 8 stones/servants of the 8 stones?  (I refuse to call them 8 balls because first of all, it makes me think of magic 8 balls and second, it reminds me of Dragon Ball.)
C) Where the heck did Roobal/Sinistora/the 8 stones go when they went through the portal to another dimension?

That's all I have to say for now.  TTFN~

Yeah it died pretty hard after people stopped using LJ as much and the series ended. Fanfiction is always welcome, though! Thank you for posting. :D

I think LJ probably just isn't as popular as it once was. A bunch of DK fans are popping up on tumblr. :D
Laenavesse: Tetheus - Why me.laenavesse on August 9th, 2011 06:52 am (UTC)
I honestly never understood that part, and I remember back when it was still being serialized a group of us were wondering if this was just another way to prologue the series (like there would be another arc or something).

A) I honestly thought Roobal died and that what we see during that segment is Sinistora with Kharl manipulating like the manipulator that he is. Whether or not he was actually already working for him is questionable. Since Kharl can basically control his creations, all that "never died" dialogue could have been a lie.

B) As for the 8 stones...I have nooo idea. If I really had to make a guess, I'd say it might have to do with sealing something. Kharl wouldn't want them if it weren't for some purpose of his, and despite my recent re-reading, I can't think of anything. Nadil's castle basically exploded in the end, so if there was something sealed in there because of the stones, it's...well it could still be there somewhere no idea. Another (far-fetched) possibility is that those stones are related to the stone that Kitchel uses for the map.

C) I would assume they all went back to Kharl.

Sorry if that's not much help—I think you can just take free rein with this part XD
secretforkeepssecretforkeeps on August 9th, 2011 07:29 pm (UTC)
I know, with Kharl being Kharl, you really can't tell if that was actually Roobal or just... Sinistora with Roobal's appearance. It's quite frustrating to make a theory about what's going on when there's hardly any facts to go on. (It's like back when you're only up to volumes 4-5 and trying to figure out what the heck is up with Rath.) Someone told me that in an interview Mineko Ohkami said the stones had to do with the 4 devas, but I've never heard of that anywhere else and can't find anything to back that up. :P Eitherway, there are 8 stones and 4 devas, so...
Laenavesse: Ace - *thumbs up*laenavesse on August 9th, 2011 07:33 pm (UTC)
...Huh. Never heard that one before.

Maybe they're just stones that were used to decorate Kharl's little crown and he let Nadil borrow them because he wanted them, too—
secretforkeeps: Takerusecretforkeeps on August 9th, 2011 07:52 pm (UTC)
Me neither. I'm thinking it was something they heard in passing as just a suggestion, and now they remember it as being fact? Eitherway, I'm looking into various legends of things in numbers of 8. But I'm still not sure if I should be looking into "Servants of the 8 Stones" or just "8 Stones." XP Ahhh, this series will be the death of me!

Sarehptar weighing in!
Yayyy DK discussion! And a topic so pertinent to my interests too. X3

I kind of have a love affair going on with Sinistra because of this whole issue with Roubal, etc. etc. I'm almost glad her (I keep forgetting I made up the part about Sinistra being a 'her' in the first place... Do they use any gendered pronouns for... it in the original?) I'm almost glad her storyline/abilities were left open because there's so much room for bizarre and lovely head canon. XD Like you, I was also really confused while reading the books about whether or not we were seeing Sinistra pretending to be Roubal or if it really was Roubal, so on so forth. Obviously my thoughts on the matter are totally conjecture and fall on the side of ridiculous sometimes, but here's the basic assumptions I made:

1) Sinistra is a shapeshifter or something like. Whether I think she can take any form that is convenient or she's limited to a certain form sort of depends on my mood. In any case, I don't think her looking like Roubal is just coincidence: when Kharl had Bierrez under his knife, he seemed to pay particular attention to the arm Roubal loaned Bierrez--it's entirely possible he kept some of that research/encouraged her to take that particular form. Furthermore, Sinistra is a replacement for Left Bird, the governor of the spirit in charge of minds--it even seems possible she used the nearest person, Bierrez's, memory to decide her form.

2) Roubal was really dead, and the one we see in the latter books is just Sinistra using his form to get what she needs and lying through her teeth about it. But that doesn't mean he's not THERE per say... The river of the dead around Nadil's castle sort of makes a convenient ground for collecting/toying with souls. It seems very possible to me that Sinistra could have just... hijacked Roubal's wandering soul for her own purposes, sort of like a parasite, and then let it go again when she no longer needed... his thumbs. (Alternatively, if Roubal WAS working for Kharl, there's every possibility Kharl was like "lol, I'll let you live on as my dog!" ...Or just picked up a random soul/body from his stores and tossed her that.)

3) As for the eight stones... Their being "servants" sort of made me imagine eight miniature versions of Garfakcy following around after Kharl like naggy puppy dogs. In a slightly more serious vein, I don't have the books with me to check timing, but something makes me think they could have been "servants" of the castle during the time Rath and Kharl were happily reigning tyrannical over Arinas. On a slightly less possible vein, if I remember correctly, the stones were brought up in the same interview where Ohkami talked about Kharl potentially being a servant of the Four Devas, right? I always imagined the stones were some sort of gift/connection to the Devas and possibly integral to his creating such a demon as Rath. (Told you I'm just BSing here.) At the very least, stones and spheres are extremely important in traditional alchemy--in particular the concept of "eight spheres" appears over and over again, even on etchings for the Ripley scroll... It's possible the servants aren't sentient at all, but references to the chakras, the planetary bodies, the primary metals used in alchemy, etc.

4) Okay, another huge leap here, but I TOTALLY think Sinistra and the stones ended up in the Star Princess's dimension! I got the sense she wasn't going back to Kharl because she spilled the stones, and I mean, that would have been the perfect kick off to the next arc of the series, where the Star Princess's story is revealed, more of Kharl and Rath's backstory is told, and maybe even Nohiro could have had a hand in things! Instead it sort of became an aborted arc, and a lot of the questions it had the potential to answer were left by the wayside. Poor Kharl basically gets no ending at all. I imagine him sitting in his castle post-series wondering where the hell his dog went. Just sayin'.

Andddd this is now a wall of text. Gee great. I'll never learn to shut up. (Ahhhh but I'm getting excited about this series all over again!!)

Re: Sarehptar weighing in!
Ah, you use a new account too? (No wonder your Sarehptar livejournal had no recent posts....)
1. But no, I don't think Sinistora's gender was ever clarified. The name sounds feminine, but the transformation into Roobal makes me think it's a male. But I like your idea of Kharl using Roobal's arm in the creation process, I hadn't thought of that.
2. Maybe Roobal did die... But consider that if he had been working for Kharl, it's also possible that he retrieved the corpse and then used that in the creation of Sinistora and that's why he said he was grateful to Kharl for giving him a soul. I don't think Thatz and Bierrez were in the corridor for the dead at that time. (I'm really dubious about whether Bierrez actually shouted "Is this a corridor for dead people?" since that's where the others were at the time and the scenes switched so much, perhaps it was another Tokyopop slip-up. The translations and dialogue during that period in the series was really inaccurate.)
3. AND OMG. Where did you hear about that interview/do you have a copy/could you point me to a link? But I'm going to have to research these "Eight Spheres" now. You are so lovely and knowldgeable~
4. First of all, go read my last post I made under my Random_Irony account. It's revealed that there is actually a world above the Three Pillars of Beginning which is just mind-blowing that that never got mentioned elsewhere. I feel like maybe that's where the Heaven's Star Princess resides. But by dimension, I had kind of been thinking it would be something like where Kitchel and Ringleys got stuck. Idk. It's vague. :P

And I like walls of text to answer my questions. :D

Re: Sarehptar weighing in!
After seeing Sinistra turn into Roubal, I also thought that it might be male... But then I fell totally in love with her being some kind of wild genderless shapeshifting queen who doesn't care about male/female at all and is just as happy in a boy's body as a (possibly female) doggy body. I mean, just think about the hilariousness that sort of thing could bring with it. XDDD You never know who you'll wake up with if you let her sleep at the end of your bed! Of course, being based off of Crewger sort if implies male, but come on, Sinistra is totally a feminine in Italian! The contrast in fur making her a yin-yang with Crewger could also work nicely into her being female too, dark being the more feminine of the two elements... Tee hee, I'll just have to cross my fingers for her being revealed as a girl in the sequel if that ever happens. X3 In the meantime... *writes really silly and fangirly Sinistra fics*

Once I saw the transformation, I re-read all of Roubal's dialogue as coming from Sinistra and took the "grateful for the soul" thing to mean that Sinistra was grateful that Kharl created her--if Kharl gave Roubal a (new) soul, wouldn't it be weird for Roubal to "remember" Bierrez? And if he just revived him, why not just say that? Although I definitely think there is a connection to Roubal, so I'm definitely leaning toward the "Kharl used some part of Roubal to create Sinistra." And it is totally possible Roubal was working for Kharl beforehand, since he just seemed to be flying under the radar in Nadil's castle, possibly looking for the very same artifacts Sinistra went to the castle to retrieve toward the end?

I was under the impression the dead souls were fairly pervasive through the basement of Nadil's castle but that could be Tokyopop's fault, definitely. There's also no saying Sinistra wasn't there beforehand though, thoroughly trolling the castle in search of intel and Kharl's things, etc. If I were in charge of souls, I wouldn't pass up a river of the dead. X3 (Also, the Tokyopop translations were inaccurate from start to finish, making an already confusing series hell on us poor fans.)

Augh that interview!! To be honest, I'm thinking it was a post on this LJ actually? But it would have been a couple years ago? I poked around a bit after mentioning it in my last comment but couldn't find it right away. I'm worried it might have been another site linked in the DK Gaia forum, in which case I'll have to do a lot of poking to find it. But find it I will. I believe it was the short interview where she mentioned how she was rushing a bit to get the series done, and how there were some stories she wanted to tell but wasn't going to be able to, such as the servants of the eight stones and Kharl being connected to the Devas, which she spoke of in her stereotypically vague manner. XD I remember being like "OMG WHUT" when I read it. I'll start shifting through my own old discussions when I get back to my house on the 19th--using this tiny iPad is driving me crazy.

As far as where the Star Princess lived, don't quote me on this because I haven't re-read the series in years now and don't have the books in front of me, but wasn't a big deal made about her needing to travel across dimensions via some type of portal with gem/Dragon Eye-ish thing in tow? For some reason, that's what I'm remembering. Of course that completely doesn't rule out her living in the world at the top of the three pillars--if there's a whole world up there, it may only be accessible via portal, and may in fact be some kind of alternate dimension--much like the one Kitchel falls in where she can see the treasures (see the world events) but not touch them (not affect things without crossing the border into the "world" below). Like you said, it is really vague!! And Tokyopop doesn't make it any easier--sometimes Kainaldia and Arinas are "worlds", sometimes called dimensions, and sometimes just plain continents. Is the Star Princess from another "world" in that sense, or legitimately from another world in the sense of dimension/planet? How small/large is the world at the top of the three pillars? Too many questions, not enough answers. @_@ (But in a way, that's sort of my favorite thing about DK...)

Tada, here,have another wall. <3

I found it! Here, here, here! (I did link to it wayyy back when in the DK Gaia forum.)

Like I said in my original post there, I can't verify the quality of the translation or even whether its official or not, but it seems fairly legit to me? (At least the part about the cats is completely true. XD)

I wish I could have seen all the things she brings up in that last answeeerrr!

Re: Sarehptar weighing in!
HAHA. I'm not sure how I'll be able to write that all in, BUT SOMEHOW I WILL. 8D Some of the other clues seem strange. I'd like to get my hands on that interview in it's raw version. >.> It kind of sounds like it's referring to right before Nadil was revived, but the date implies that it was later in the series. And thank you for the link, you're amazing~

I do really like the idea of Sinistora as a female, it does truly fit. But considering Sinistora never spoke when in her canine form, it simply can't be verified. D: But I feel like if he created all of her, Roobal would have said, "grateful for creating me" or something to that effect, though once again, it could easily be a Tokyopop goof off. But the whole bodies and souls and memories thing is just too confusing. Every other instance of revival I can think of has been souls receiving a new body, not bodies getting new souls. So Sinistora might be an entirely new soul, or she could be Roobal reincarnated.

And she did need to time-travel to get back to her home, but the Heaven's Star Princess's title implies that she rules over a heavenly land or perhaps rules over both Dusis and Arinas. So it would make sense that she would come from whatever world is above the Three Pillars of Beginning. And the characters used were specifically "world," though a dimension could probably be referred to as a world.

Re: Sarehptar weighing in!
Ha ha, an admirable goal! At this point, I've given up on "accuracy" and getting all the events of the books right in my head--I think for me, one of the most fun parts of DK is how much room for speculation there is, and how much room you have to just do things on your own... it makes writing fanfic for this fandom so much more fun than for others where people are always like "That would never happen RAWR!" It sort of feels like in DK, everything can and might happen. XD

I have a feeling the interview was conducted some time before Ddae translated it, so that could explain the discrepancy in dates--but raw would be nice... Nadil's "sleeping" is sort of an odd word for it regardless of timing. I doubt we would ever find it though; I don't know if the Shinshokan website keeps archives that far back...

(Speaking of things we might never find, I've been dying for good quality scans of the datebook images and I've never seen any decent ones! D:)

I guess we'd need Cesia's "talks to animals" power to find out if Shinisu is a girl or a boy! (Either way, it'll still be fun to write her/him shamelessly abusing that form change power! *gets hit with a brick*)

The Star Princess just drives me crazy in general... She was just... there and then not there, like a deus ex machina. I was always waiting for the second shoe to drop and there to be some crazy reveal with her or her time, but it never came. T.T Pleaseee let there actually be a sequel that explainssss things!

There absolutely do need to be new translations!! My Japanese has become atrocious due to lack of use (um, haven't used it in a real conversation in more than four years D:) but I have access to uber high grade scanners via my grad school and you know I love to clean and make pretty-looking scanlations so I will happily be your scan staff and typesetter and continuity checker! <3 <3 <3

Tee hee, I'm glad to be back in this fandom~!

Re: Sarehptar weighing in!
Oh definitely. There's so much room for interpretation (as our discussion shows) but it's also fun to hunt for the little clues and details that ARE there. It's like being a detective! XD (And also I feel silly when I right something and then discover something that contradicts what I wrote.)

Hmm, that's a thought. I'll have to search around the Shinshokan website some. I might find something, even if it's not the interview.

(By datebook, which one? I own the 1994 datebook and must confess that just the other night I ordered the 2001 datebook. >.> And I have scans of others. Have you taken a look at my tumblr yet?)

And that sounds like a crack fic that needs to be written. Or maybe Cesia and Sinistora arguing and then getting violent. I feel like this is a plotbunny Schnickledooger could run away with. XD

Ohhhh, I know! She's like the definition of deus ex machina. And Ohkami-sensei knows it, too. XD

And if you wanna help with the scanning and editing, I will happily do translations. :D It should be easier, since I won't necessarily be translating everything from scratch like I do with the gaidens so much as checking Tokyopop's accuracy and re-wording dialogue and making spelling corrections. :)

Re: Sarehptar weighing in!
Ha ha totally... I'm always worried about something not lining up with canon in my KH fic and don't even get me started on Cloaks oh god oh god. But at least Ohkami's canon is so confusing if you make little mistakes no one will notice. XD

I think the 2000 datebook maybe? In particular, there's a tricked out picture of Rath with green hair that I used to have as a winamp skin and the details on that picture are just like WHOA. I did look through the tumblr, but there are so many pictures it's possible I missed some of my old favorites in there. Will have to look againnn.

Mmm crack fic. I'm all over it but in truth it does sound like a Schnick fic. XD We should um... Petition her!

Awesome possum! Let me know when you want some scans--I don't have the first few books in Japanese but since I was looking into getting them anyway, this is as good an excuse as any! :D

Re: Sarehptar weighing in!
Eheh, very true. The series is so long and has been going on for so many years, most people forget a lot of the details anyway. :P

Would it happen to be this picture? http://s3.amazonaws.com/data.tumblr.com/tumblr_lpoweeoHGf1qezmm1o1_1280.jpg?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAJ6IHWSU3BX3X7X3Q&Expires=1313028243&Signature=qwqtSl%2FdRrriqDAr83PSt4hgoT0%3D (Long link is long, forgive me.) :P

Haha, I haven't talked to Schnick in a while. I should send her a message anyway. XD

And well, I have all the early volumes in Japanese already, so the translating portion is no problem. We would just need scanned images to do the editing with. For that, we could just steal the english manga scans off of manga fox or something, but the quality is just average. :P The original japanese volumes would be better, but I'll leave it to you to decide whether you would want to use the scans of the tokyopop versions or do entirely new scans.

Re: Sarehptar weighing in!
Yesss it was that picture. Ahhhh but the resolution on the one I had was like... POP!! Tough to get really high quality scans for such a rare series! D:

I think it would be better to work with Japanese scans, just in case Tokyopop left off some side comments outside the speech bubbles or didn't reproduce something in the cleanest manner possible... Plus there are the lovely color posters and covers on the Japanese versions~! ANDDD of course I just went and impulse bought the first four volumes (in spiffy bunko format) so I guess that makes it a moot issue! XD (Those shipping fees are evil though!) Do you have English copies so you can work backward from their translations or will you need scans of those too? In either case, the bunko volumes should be at my house in Indiana by the 16th of August, and I'll be back there by the 19th and I can start scanning ASAP. The scanners at the ND library are public use for free and super fast, so I should be able to scan the first four volumes in literally no time. It'll take me longer to clean them, but since the translations aren't done yet either, that'll work out nicely. Yayyy let's do this!

Re: Sarehptar weighing in!
Yeah, I feel like I saw nice res scans somewhere, but maybe it was one of laena's wallpapers or something... >.>

And yeah, there are a lot of reasons why the japanese version would be better to scan, and I guess if you've bought the bunko anyway, it's fine. As long as you don't mind bending the spine and all that. :P And yeah, I have the whole series in english and almost all of it in Japanese. I'm actually getting my wisdom teeth taken out tomorrow (joy...) so the next few days I'll just be lazing around at home with little to do. I guess I can do lots of translations!! XD

In regards to names, how do we want to spell them? Should we stick with whatever name Tokyopop most often used, or go for the original romanizations that Mineko Ohkami picked? Examples being Alfeage instead of Alfeegi and Thats instead of Thatz, etc.
Sarehptarana_colutha on August 10th, 2011 06:51 am (UTC)
Re: Sarehptar weighing in!
The scanners at my school are uber nifty and scan from above to prevent damage to the books, so they should be fine. And if they do bend, well... For a good cause!

I'll be out camping tomorrow and Thursday so I'll be vanished for a bit too. Take it easy after your dental visit!

Ahhhh names. On the one hand, official spellings are official... On the other hand, I'm really attached to "Kharl"... I think we should maybe go case by case and pick spellings that take official romanizations into account while also phonetically matching the original Japanese characters AND being, you know, logically pronounceable in English. XD Which sounds like a tall order but will probably boil down to "I really like this spelling the best... what do you think?" ha ha. I can understand the trouble Tokyopop had trying to romanize these bizarre names in the first place... I think another thing to take into account is name origin too; Ohkami puts a crazy lot of thought into her character names. I wouldn't mind doing research to see if some of these names have unexpected origins which might help us determine spelling. (Opinions off the top of my head: I'm cool with Alfeage over Alfeegi but kind of can't stand "Luwalk"--possibly because it reminds me of Luke Skywalker...)

Okay, I'll brb... in like two days. XD

Oh. Well that's pretty spiffy. XD

Haha, I'll probably sleep a lot these next few days. XD Have fun camping!!

And as for names... Yeah, I'll make a list of them as they appear in the manga and we'll just work on them case by case? XD I know there are several other lists of character name spellings lying around...

See ya!

Re: Back~!
Awesome~ One thing I thought of while you were away: Since the bunko volumes are all condensed, I wonder if they still have the author's notes at the end? I've always been meaning to go through and translate the end notes because of all the extra info we'd probably pick up, and now would be the perfect opportunity! I already have scans of them, but they probably aren't as nice as your scans will be. If the bunkos don't have the end notes, do you think you'd be able to work with them?

Re: Back~!
I'm not sure if they have the author's notes, but I would also love to see all of those translated and included. I can definitely give it my best shot to clean up the scans you have, if the bunko volumes don't have them! :D

On that vein, I translated one set of them for Aquajogger a long, long time ago... I can try and find those, if you'd like to use that translation as a reference for when you do your own translation! <3

Cool, just let me know whether or not they're included with the bunkos and if not, I'll just send you my scanned pages along with the translations whenever we get to that point. In either case, I'll message you my email so you can just contact me directly if you need to.

And if you could dig those up, that would be awesome! Of the author's notes, the only thing I've translated is a page about Ringa and Naatasu from the end of Volume 11. So every little bit would help!

No luck so far digging up the scans--they were brought up on like page 55 of the DK thread on Gaia, but then I can't remember how I delivered them to Aquajogger or where I hosted them. I thought I might have given her the links over comments, but nothing on her profile so I'm thinking it might have been PM and my mailbox doesn't go that far back! D; I'll keep scrolling through the thread and my old image hosting accounts to see if I can bring them up...

Do you talk to Aquajogger any more? Any chance she's still in the fandom?

Don't worry about it too much, it's fine if you can't find it. And there's plenty of time until I actually get to that point, so no rush.

And I haven't talked to Aquajogger in... jeez, I wanna say two years? Not for a while. We might be able to drag her back though. >:D
